I'm not a qualified appreciator of portraits (neither an executor) but to my eyes this is an impressive and strong one. The aggressive contrast reinforcing the bold lines on his face made it stand out for me.

I love a good, hard-focus portrait, such as those from Mehmet Aikin (sp). The expression here is evocative, stirring. For me a bit less constrast would be better, but its excellent here. Highlights on cheek, nose, below eye seem to lose a bit of detail, though the expression seems the most powerful element.
