First Bird shot with a used 600 5.6 ED AIS and DF, off an old Welt

Safe Lock tripod. Delighted with the lens! This a modest crop.

Watcha think?

Excellent shot with fine detail and true color, although the Robin doesn't seem impressed with that big lens pointing at him... Mike

Sandy...

An excellent shot with good detail.  The robin is tack-sharp, b/g is slightly blurred, and there is eye glint.  B/g is not the most pleasing but you take what you can get with bird photography.  I like your shot...

Mike, strangely enough, some of the birds that aren't bothered with my other lenses, or even my walking up a bit, flew at the sight of the Big lens.  Robins don't spook much.  Best, Sandy

Thanks, Bill!  Before buying I read that the DOF on this lens is a little shallow even at F22.  A lot of what I will be shooting will be in the trees or out on the prairie, may not be an issue.  With our backyard waterfall -- at least it draws the birds! Best, Sandy

Even with the monster lens, Sandy, it's amazing that you were able to get the robin to pose for you so expertly.   I like this image the most, compared with the other two - mostly because the robin gets lost against the background.  (Besides, the fish really weirded me out!)

Michael, thanks! Probably should have cropped the others as well.  Robins are pretty easy, out here anyway. As to the fish, we have a variety of cast iron from the orient around the house, critters and lanterns, an interest of my wife's.  The Giant goldfish is easily the most bizarre!. Best, Sandy
