From my first roll of Ilford 3200, playing with grain. (I mostly learned where not to use grain, but liked this one). A medium yellow filter was used.

This is done with Ilford Delta 3200, and was one of my first

experiments with grain. Any thoughts?

Nice candid. Contrasting dress colors enhanced this B/W portrait. Hair do brought an interesting pattern into the picture

It's so difficult to get candid's like this with 2 kids, very well done. You have done a great job with the film, as it can be quite contrasty if not exposed or developed properly - the patterned dress works really well too. The grain suits this casual shot well.

Nice sharp image with good composition good exposure values and shadow detail. Nice grain considering the speed of the film.

Very nice catch of the expressions on their faces.

Rich in story. A moment in childhood so familiar that it makes your heart jump. Excellent subject, composition and TIMING. A little more DOF to get the foremost girl's hair and fingertips sharp would be good for me. What a story though!

Many thanks for the comments. I'm always amazed at how much I can learn about my own photo and about how to take the next one from listening to how others see it.

By the way, the serious discussion that is actually going on between these girls is a discussion over what to play on next at the playground. We should all take play so seriously!

Many thanks again. I am very interested in Peter's comment that the choice of film wasn't important. I don't think it was critical, but there are a couple of things I thought the grain did for this shot: first, I think it makes the textures of the shot more interesting, particularly the facial textures, and second, I think it moderates both the highlights and shadows a bit. While the shot may have been successful with, for example, a faster film like tech pan, I'm not sure it would have been quite as successful. But now I'm thinking about it. Any other thoughts from others more experienced than I? I am just starting to play with these films.

Strong and sensitive at the same time. This is really very good work. Well seen and executed. I like the grain. Grain is good!

I am not sure about grains, I guess, this is a matter of taste. My attention is attracted to very natural, sincere childish expressions. Another positive thought is tight composition and vertical line in the middle (should it be straight vertical?) Gray tones are fine and a little lost detail in right bottom cornel do not make impression any worse (I read, you do not like praise, so I've done my best :))

Best wishes!

I haven't looked at this photo in a long while, and now that I've come back to it I feel compelled to express how excellent it is. The moment captured here is just absolutely beautiful.

"Rich in story", as somebody wrote above... I agree. Very alive, well composed. Definately one of your best pictures posted here, imo. Besides that, the grain is fine for me, I'm just not too sure how much "noise" goes with it at a larger file size. And mostly I was here to wish you a happy new year, and to let you know that someone is still reading your contributions to the site with great interest on and off. Happy picture-taking for 2008.
