Rick, I like this version.  The vertical format echoes the shape of the subjects.  The variation in angle among the rows is nicely wave-like.  The close crop keeps the focus on the repetition of shapes - the outlines of the boats and the interior slats - and the subtle colors.

I looked at the other version and I like this one better.  I agree with the previous review that this crop makes the pattern and the boats the subject without the distraction from the tree and water.

It depends on what you want to convey. Too abstract for an abstract? No. I would have gone further and cropped the area of water top left. As the others have said, this image has pleasing form. I wonder, as I really like the subtle colour that each boat has, if a slight boost to the colour contrast could perhaps enhance this image. You have pinks, yellows and greens, I just worry that if you did so, the already dominant greens could become to garish. Perhaps hold them back?

"Too abstract," as Scott notes, doesn't really mean much.  Since the fate of this image is in your hands, Rick, the degree of abstraction you should seek depends on what you want to accomplish with it.  Personally, I'd like to see a bit more pop from the colors, but I think the concept and composition are just fine.  The detail in, and organization of, the boats give the image a surreal mood.
