Guest Guest Posted September 19, 2003 What have we here? This is very interesting! I cant quite figure out what Jons problem is, but he definitely has something inside that needs to come out. I like the whole thing: the leather-like background, the burned in area around his head, the posture of the man, the knurled fingers, the leaning-forward position with the neck bent backwards and the powerful expression as if he is screaming from the top of his lungs. Although I cant quire figure out why he is screamingthe photograph offers no clues. One thing that I find out of place is the designer slackscant quite stitch the whole thing together unless this is depicting modern man and the effects of the crazy fast paced life he has to endure on a daily basis! I wish his eyes were open instead, that would allow us to see a little more of whats going on inside his head. With the eyes closed, you could just as well say that he is singing or acting in a play. Excellent cropping or framing (whatever the case may be). Very good use of the full frame 35mm format. Very nice colors and incredible use of single-light lighting. There seems to be a little bit if gamma problem around his head and on his left arm, but this complements the image rather than destroying it, as it accentuates the intensity of the moment and the emotions that he is feeling. I guess Im trying to say that the gamma thing seems intentional instead of a mistake or negligence in the part of the photographer. 7 for originality 7 for aesthetics. Perfect! Link to comment
rick_franklin 0 Posted September 19, 2003 Some pretty serious emotion going on in this one. Either his girlfriend just dumped him or he ate some bad sushi. Whatever the case, a nice and unique image. Link to comment
margaret_s. 0 Posted September 20, 2003 Hmm.. when I saw this, it reminded me of Jim McNitt's blue nightmare digital composition. If you look at the two faces, they both have similar expressions except from different angles. Anyway, moving along.. Given the pose he's in, open eyes would've probably expressed something more along the lines of physical pain whereas with closed eyes, the implication is more of an emotional or psychological kind of pain. (Just my own opinion of course) Symbolically speaking, his being bare-chested further emphasizes the emotional vulnerability (esp. if you think in terms of the heart chakra being exposed) and one could argue that the dark shadows around his "aura" and behind him could reflect the darkness within his soul. The gray background is also symbolic of depression and hence an excellent choice here. The whole photo screams (no pun intended) of some form of catharsis. I'm not sure to what extent you aimed for that consciously or whether it was purely an aesthetic choice, but I think it's very effective and well-done. (Not usually prone to psychoanalyzing photos but this one seems to lend itself naturally to that!) Link to comment
erikj 0 Posted December 19, 2003 This is an interesting, unique photo. Is this painting with light or Photoshop, or what? His expression/pose needs a bit more context to me. Link to comment
koval 0 Posted December 19, 2003 In this case it is a combination of both . Thank you for your comments and input PK > Link to comment
