I concur with your opinion as far as the images as presented.  But I do wonder if there are alternate crops of this shot that might bring out the layers while holding the lead in of the river ... just a thought.  Thanks for sharing with PN.

I think the portrait crop condenses the main elements of the photograph: the river, the mountains and the stunning fog. All the green grass dilutes the effect.

I think the vertical crop presents a bit stronger image. The river leads in nicely and, as previously mentioned, a bit less green makes the condensed layers stronger
