About 3,000 belgian based Morrocans pray during the funeral ceremony

for a murdered moroccan family in a park in a suburb of Brussels.

The family was murdered by their old belgian neighbor because he

couldn't face no longer the transition of his once rich neigborhood

into a north african gettho.

Hello Ken, I waited for the child to look in my direction but he didn't. I could follow the funeral ceremony but I was asked not to take pix during the prayings so I had to shoot this somehow secretly

Just curious as to what the reaction to the photo might have been had there been no explanation what so ever of what was taking place in tit. This is a striking photo and grabbed my attention right away. Great capture. I can also see this image as a very eerie one, where all the adults have there heads down, as if there was severe danger on the horizon, yet the lone child is ignoring that danger.

I'd crop in closer, losing the poles and some of the people left to focus more attention on the innocence of a child amongst adults in a serious situation.

Neil, I agree on what you wrote but there's more than the composition alone in a press pic. I didn't crop it that way (believe me I see what you mean and I made a crop that way) because that would have cut out part of the message. If you crop under the poles you lose the atmosphere of 3,000 people attending the funeral and that's just the story in this documentary. Thanks for your comment. Best Geert

Wow, I really like this shot. The child standing in the bowing multitude suggests many ideas to the viewer. I like the composition too, and I am curious about how this photo would look in colour. Well done.

An excelent composition! I like just exactly the way it is presented and cropped. The only thing that I find a little bit distracting, is the tiny black spot on the back of a praying man on the upper-right side of the photo. Anyway...a photo with a story and eye-catching! Very very well done.

Mauricio, Hey I'm happy you noticed the spot in the back. It means you analised the pic very good, I saw the spot after I posted the pic and was to lazy to change it, sorry for that. Thanks for your comment. Best Geert

you have succeeded in capturing the kind of magic that Cartier-Bresson proposed. compositionally this photograph is borderline perfect following different methods of subdivision, my only complaint is that it seems a pity that is was not taken on film.

Geert, great photo, It may sound weired but I like the child the way it is now (not aware of the camera), the impact would have been much less if he was looking toward the camera (IMO). very well done.

Beautifully composed; the large number of people assembled is part of the message. I don't think the title is necessary to appreciate the image, although it certainly doesn't hurt to have it. They could be praying as part of their normal daily routine. It's very powerful either way.

The kid is going away, it has nothing to do with the bloody madness of adults, and life is going on, and we hope for better. Outstanding image, Geert. Regards. Blago

WOW!! What a powerful shot!! I love it in B&W ... do you have it in color as well (just for curiosity sake)? I don't know what I like more about this ... the child or the sea of the prayerful. Just fabulous!
