Fantastic shot. But maybe the lousy performance was due to the petrified fingers of the pianist! Sad to take it out on the piano! Or maybe firewood was in short supply!

Thank you for the nice comments :) I took this photo in an abandoned mansion on an island off the coast of Estonia - I found the axe on the floor in the same room as the (grand) piano and I immediately thought they'd go well together. Despite the utterly destroyed condition I took care to wedge it in without contributing to the damage. The roll I shot in that location is one of my favourite strips of film and there are a couple more shots from it in my portfolio. An overcast day with plenty of Baltic light bouncing off the white walls made additional lighting unnecessary for this handheld shot.

The symbolism here is fantastic.

I'm not too sure what the symbolism is supposed to be but I like the tones and composition. Is it a false perspective or does the heavy piano leg only seem to have the keyboard about one foot above the ground?

@James: I'm not sure either, but I liked the firewood suggestion :) Re. perspective; the photo has not been manipulated in any way, the only editing that has been done is dust spotting and curves.
