AlainD 0 Posted February 28, 2014 Malarrif lighthouse before storm, Iceland. f/11, 25 sec, 3 images stitched together thanks to the shift fonction of the TS-24mm. I've started to use the TS during this stay in Iceland and discover that I still have a lot to learn. Long exposures and more or less extreme shift often creates a sort of halo, sometimes white, sometimes red. It's what happened (happily not too strong) here, generating a reddish-magenta halo on the rocks down below. I've tried to correct that with PS, with partial success. The rounded dark thing at the bottom of the image is a rock platform that was just below the edge of the cliff. Of course the image may have been better if taken from this platform. But the wind was strong and I thought staying alive was a good idea... Would you crop the image to get rid of this platform? I've tried to reveal it's interesting volcanic texture but found it attracting to much attention. Any comment and suggestion is welcome. Thanks! Link to comment
stp 6 Posted March 1, 2014 Yes, I'd crop the bottom to remove the platform. It's just a black blank that hides some of the rocks and contributes nothing to the photo (IMO). You might consider a square format. Except for the platform, your composition is excellent, all the way from the large boulders, shine on the smooth part of the cliff face, the inclusion of the rounded tip of the cliff, and the placement of the lighthouse. While some may want to see more detail in the cliff, I think your overall exposure is right on -- it really makes the lighthouse stand out as a special structure. Link to comment

Larry_G1664882113 15 Posted March 2, 2014 Alain, This version looks great to me. It appears to incorporate Stephen's suggestions. The unique, almost missile-looking lighthouse along wth the shape of the lava rocks and motion in the water is what adds a sense of surrealism to the image. But, it is a good sense of real surrealism. Well done. Larry Link to comment

stp 6 Posted March 3, 2014 Really, the square crop works so much better for me. Having that jumble of large rocks along the bottom edge, with no visual obstruction, makes for a much better composition. Link to comment
thadley 15 Posted March 9, 2014 Square version works very well for me because it gets rid of something that was impeding the potential appeal. Link to comment
