Sunset with Joshua Tree

slide

I used a 3 stop hard edge filter on this, possibly with a 2 stop soft edge, further contrast adjustments in photoshop.

Pretty flat light in the afternoon, almost packed it up several times

to go look for a place to camp, but light ended up breaking through

the clouds and stayed long past sunset. Comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Lovely image and nice exposure.A very simple and straightforward composition that works because of your professional skills with the filters and light.Well done.

Beautiful! You really timed the season well too, by the looks of the yellow carpet of flowers. Your use of ND grads throuought your folders is top notch! Do you have to do much Photoshop or darkroom burning/dodging to smooth things out? (For instance, the Joshua tree looks plenty bright even thoug it's well up in the Grad range.)

Greg, just noticed your comment from 3 weeks ago... On this shot I did do a bit more adjusting with photoshop. I'm pretty sure I used 5 stops of ND grads at the scene (but I can never keep track.) I added probaby the equivalent of another 1.5-2 stop hard edge across the horizon in ps. I also tried to bring out a bit more detail in the tree, I believe by creating a selection from the blue channel on the tree and pulling the curves up a bit. Still pretty dark, but that little bit of detail adds some depth.
