Your photos and discussions under it is actually a classroom for learning photography, classic and innovational. Nice conversations! This shot is very intuitive and engaging by itself, and also very beautiful and unique. FG fence is not barrier for my view at all, and actually inviting, but i expect ( i mean my vision unintentionally ) expect to see parallel horizontal lines , which are parallel with horizon. I frequently ( and any landscape photographer ) encountered such problem when shooting angular views, even when you leveled the camera exactly, and also you may end up with an unleveled horizon. The fog in the middle as well as the boat are very attractive in this scene. And finally, i love the natural greens here. Great shot. Bravo.

Hamid.

Many Thanks for your interest and thoughtful comments  I guess the unusual scene does create a little mystery : - )

GAIL

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and observations.

Not so much a magical day, but most definately a magical time of day!

I just love the light at the very beginning and the end of the day, nothing quite like it.  But alas it is fleeting and all too brief and then I am left with bright sunshine, very pleasant to relax in, but generally not conversant to great landscape images : - )

I am so glad that the image captured your imagination Gail, it means a lot to me that people can connect with my work.

I find the observations of Gary Woodard to make fascinating reading, and when he applies the powers of his observations and knowledge to my photograph, it become a forum from which I learned a few things also.

I know what you mean about the parralel lines and the expectation of the eyes to see them repeated, it kind of makes one stop and re-examine an image when this doesn't happen, and maybe thats not a bad thing either.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughtful observations and positive feedback, much appreciated!

Hello Alf, This image has a very calming effect. The fog seems to just float the boat and I like the BG as well. I enjoyed reading the comments by poster Gary, very insightful and I agree on his points and observations. Especially where we must sometimes throw the "rules" aside if you want to get the picture to begin with. Take care for now Alf.

Best Regards,

Holger

Many Thanks for your interest and positive feedback, much appreciated!

Gary, has the uncanny ability to recognise and describe the art and psychology of an image and reason its finer points. I think we all learn something from the discussion he provokes.

Take good care Holger!

Gary's comments are thought-provoking.  My neurons are still a little sleepy, sans caffeine, to fully process what's been said, so I'll simply mention that of the three, this holds more visual appeal.  All are nice, but this adds a little bit of tension, perhaps due to the fence that interrupts the dream a little, making us wonder why our fantasy it fenced in or fenced out, as it were, and then making us visually trespass.

For fun, but true at the same time.
The name Museeb in Arabic, means one who has a right opinion :). Best regards

It all gets a bit deep and meaningful : - )

But I think the essence of the discussion was that, sometimes breaking the "rules" paves the way to an interesting photograph.

I agree with your observations relating to the fence, no one expects a fence in a lake!

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and observations Jeff, much appreciated!

Many Thanks for your positive feedback, much appreciated.

It is strange the way we go through phases as photographers. I am now in a "do as little processing as possible" phase, and with some interesting results.

Good God, Alf, it took me two days to scroll to the bottom of this comment section so that I could add my two cents. It's like standing in line for a popular ride at Disneyland; the line just seems to go on and on.. How you find the time to personally respond to all of these comments is one of the wonders of our times. But this one is worth all the attention. The good photographer is blessed with good fortune. Cartier-Bresson once commented that "it's all luck". If so, then some photographers are a hell of a lot luckier than others and you seem to have found more than your share of fortunate moments. This one is like a good adventure story for young minds. Food for a growing imagination.

I hope your not preparing a a law suit against me for repetetive stress injury to your scrolling finger!  : - )

As for responding to the comments, I think its only polite to respond to people that take thier time to look at my photographs, and share thier thoughts, and I have learned a lot from the feedback I get, and hope to continue to do so.

As for good fortune and luck.....well I remember reading a retort from another photographer ...." The more I practice, the luckier I get"

And I suppose I do "engineer" my fortunate moments to some degree, I get out of bed, this time of year at 2.00 am.......or sometimes don't even bother going to bed to ensure I am at the place of my choice by dawn.  Or I will stop out very late to catch the sunset. Of course it doesn't always work, and I guess thats where the luck comes in. Just recently I set out on a journey that too was supposed to take three hours and instead took 4 hours and 30 minutes because of road works......too late for the best light!

For me one of the best indications of forthcoming "good luck" is the weather forecast......it can't be relied upon 100% .........but it gives a few clues as to what to expect.

But I don't take my good luck for granted, I am thankful that I live in a place that has an abundance of wonderful diverse countryside and coastline.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback Jack, much appreciated!

Alf,

I very much like this photo of yours.

Great comments it provoked as well.

(although I admit that I didn't read all of them in depth :-)
I too like the 'ambiguous' misty appearance of the boat on the lake - it has a pastural feel indeed.

The aspect that work really nicely for me is the way the geometrical shapes & vertical poles of the fence correlate to the mast of the boat (and its shadow).

It is a graphic touch that seems to break up the soft misty overall feel of the setting in a daring fashion, and provides a real 'punch' to your photo....

(I wouldn't mind if your composition had a bit more overall space all around (especially at the top, & maybe bottom & left of the frame as well) to off-set the scene, incl. fence, more generously... but just thinking out loud here :-)

Wishing you a good (sunny) WE - Gr, M

Sincere Thanks for your thoughtful feeback, very much appreciated!

I know what you mean about the space, but this is one of those shots that give the illusion that there is masses of space in all directions. In actual fact, there is a group of trees on the right just out of the shot, there is a camp site just to the left on the far bank. I might have got a bit more foreground in, but I had to balance it with the other boundaries.

Although I quite liked the shot myself, I was honestly surprised by the great response from others.

Best Regards

Hi, Alf! Wow! I don't really look at any picture as wrong or right. I go by feeling: it captures me - it is right (for me). It leaves me indifferent - it is not right (for me). Rules - it is ABC. But some can write threats, another - beautiful poetry - all with the same abc. Behind each photograph is a personality, soul, vision of a photographer. I definitely admire all this in you. Very nice shot, I am glad you like it. Warm regards, Tamara

You are quite right to view images by how they make you feel. For that is the really the purpose of a photograph.

To share a vision, an experience, or a moment in time.  In fact the more I can make someone "feel" something from viewing my photographs, the more I think I have been successful in my aim.

Thank you so much Tamara, I am glad you like it too!

Warm Regards

Alf
