He seems to know his place in the world and is very content with it.  The dog's admiration is an added bonus.  Nice lighting, as if it is coming through a window.  The fire, IMO, is almost too much and seems to command too much attention; I wish it were a bit more subdued.  It's a great portrait.  An alternative:  what if he were looking at the dog?
