In the early morning hours of April 12, 2013, the Freezing Rain/Snow

that the Weather Network had forecasted began. Depending on the

Temperature and amount of precipitation there were warnings of

possible Power Outages, and downed trees. The winds got wild and

I was quite nervous. We have a beautiful big old Elm tree in our

backyard. It is well over 100 years old and surprisingly healthy. I kept

checking the tree through the night. It was heavy laden with ice so

badly that the 'umbrella' of branches were bowed over severely. I

finally fell asleep about 4 a.m. I awoke around 8 a.m. to find that we

were without Power. We had decided before Christmas that it would

not be a possibility of 'if' but 'when' the Power went out. It was then

that we decided to purchase a Generator and my husband went to

work fitting the house to accommodate all the changes needed to

make us self sufficient if we ever did loose Power. His hard work

paid off, and in no time we had the Refrigerator going, I was sipping

on a warm cup of tea, and soon the Furnace was heating the house

that had cooled down considerably. Power returned fully by about 6

p.m. It was a great opportunity to try out our 'Preparedness Plan' but

unfortunately our Great Elm suffered devastating injuries. However,

we were warm, safe and dry, life was good. (your visits/comments

A very nice image with good detail and post-processing, Gail.  Brrrr, that looks cold for April.  Glad I am farther South.

Hi Gail,

An interesting image, and attractive to view.

Technically as good as the lens will provide at F/5.6. This would have been a delightful shot using your 100mm at F/2.8 macro lens.

Warmest Regards, Mike

Yes my macro would have done much better. I am determined to learn to use this lens properly. I suppose it was not the best day to do that. I had to hold open the screen door and handhold to take this shot. Found it challenging. It was raining, (not really bad) but enough to get on my lens and icicles were beginning to drop from above me!

thank you for reminding me (us) that a prime would have worked better in this situation, always good to choose your best options.

fond regards, Gail

Sincere thanks Jack for those kind words of critique. I didn't like what was above the solar light, so I had to do a bit of 'searching' for alternatives!

Dear Gail,

I love all the subtle colors in this as well as the wonderful play of light on the ice. The detail is incredible and adds great depth to foreground of the image. Nicely conceived!

I am sorry to hear about your elm. In the area where I live we have magnificent Live Oak trees...each one a work of art. With every hurricane I worry about them, so I can relate to your concerns that night!

Hello Gail

This one triggerd my interest. Very well taken.  Very good sharpness which suits the motiv. Also very good processing. Well done. I am not at all on tuned in on the rateing 5.18 for this so far. Think it should be higher.

Kind regards

Bela Dick

Gail, a photo very well structured, composed and edited. The very low saturation of all the colors increases the feelings of cold and winter. An image to admire, brava.
