Beautiful scene with loads of atmosphere! It reminds me of that sleepy little town in Northern California featured in the Alfred Hitchcock suspense movie, The Birds, only the buildings are obviously European. I'm curious about the structure up on the hill; is it a salvaged old castle or church? I love the dark sky and mood and how the light buildings seem to glow; lovely reflections. Thank you for sharing. :)

You would fall in love with this place, there is so much character and history attached to it.  This is the North East Yorkshire town of Whitby.

The Church you can see is the Church of St Mary, it is an Anglican Parish Church dating back to AD 1110

But even more interesting and ancient is the ruined Abbey that is situated a small distance behind the Church, the site dates back to AD 657 and was founded by the Anglo Saxon King "Oswy" of Northumbria.

There is a lot of history regarding the old Abbey rumoured as being the final resting place for Dracula, and just recently human bones were unearthed during a landslip, that are said to belong to him .......but erm I'm keeping an open mind on that one : - )  But the dark mood you mention fits in well with the tales!

Amazing!!

When regarding the outcome of your post-processing, I find it quite hard to imagine how you could not see the image's potential for so many years. :-)

Just one thing: The part in the lower right corner, where the water is not completely blurred, kind of distracts me a little. Have you already considered smoothening it out?

I tend to look at images shortly after I have taken them, and then not re-visit them for quite some time. Usually when I do, I find somethng worthy of rescue.

 

I'm glad you mentioned that water because yes, it is rather distracting and I really don't like it.  I'm not sure how I would smooth it out though, maybe painstaking cloning would do it, but I'm not really very good at fiddly bits : -)
