Tangerine Mellon

ian cameron

Mellon Udrigle, Laide, ScotlandJust occasionally Mellon Udrigle pays off handsomely at both ends of the day and on this occasion a phenomenally good sky lit up behind our wee group of photographers and the clouds reflected all that light onto the beach whilst the setting sun painted the mountains of Coigach, Suilven and the Inverpolly reserve scarlet. I found a very simple low amplitude foreground to use with this scene that ensured that nothing dominated attention but never-the-less gently guides you to the mountain line at the horizon. That same sky became even more intense later on but the mountains receded into darkness in the twilight.

Ian,  I like the simplicity and pastel presentation in this image.  You also created a wonderful composition.  the ripples in front make the image quite successful.  To me, they lead they eye into the image.  Excellent use of great light.  One suggestion is that you may want to reduce the noise in this image, especially below the orange part.  Nice image, Ian.  Larry

Hey Ian, this really is a most beautiful shot. The first thing to comment on is the colours, which are so beautiful. Subtle pastel dustings of colour from almost the whole spectrum. I love the layers of colour, the way they mix and bleed. The tangerine orange of the main hills certainly draws the eye, but I wonder whether you have maybe overdone this bit just a touch, it seems unnaturally bright, and or over saturated. Compositionally this image is, to my mind, about perfect. I love the ridged sand in the foreground which adds a little broken interest from the layers that are above it, it also nicely mirrors the clouds. The patterns in the sand are also almost an inverted copy of thye shape of the orange ridge. So much to enjoy. Thank you.

Hi Scott

I checked on the original transparency and it is very very close.  I could easily back off the red sat a little on the hills though.

A fabulous shot, Ian. I really like the composion and light, you waited for the right moment. Could I suggest an alternative processing (raising the black point and decreasing the saturation of the reds) ? I do not know which film you used (I would guess Astia because of the soft colors). I used to be a Velvia fan, hence my more vivid interpretation. Best wishes. Peter

I really like the soft lighting and pastel colors. All the visual elements are well organized and visual transition is smooth.
