Once the iconic image of Burkina Faso (or Upper Volta as it used to be), the

sight of a child leading a blind adult is now fairly uncommon. Indeed, it's

getting hard to find people who've lost their sight to river blindness which, until

a couple of decades ago, was a scourge that drove people from almost one-

fifth of the land in the country. The disease, spread by river-breeding flies that

carry a parasite, has been extirpated in most of West Africa by a World Bank-

led program, and its only remaining victims are now quite old.
