I can only assume the roots go deep to find moisture. And there must be water as the image shows what looks to be a dried up stream.  The upright rock columns amazing. What a fascinating place.

It is a fascinating place indeed. Like many other deserts (the one closest to me in the south of Israel included) it is not really the lack of water that makes it into a desert but rather the fact that the terrain is impermeable. So there is rain accompanied by flash flooding that is spectacular and really dangerous if you are caught in it.
