Hi Richard,

Rich colors , sharp details and a nice DOF are all expectations of sch a fine lens like the micro Nikkor 105mm.

I will not split hairs on the F/6.3 setting , since the actual f-stop was probably F/5.6. Nikon cameras will read the distance and adjust the "effective f-stop" as to indicate the amount of light falling onto the sensor.

Even at F/2.8 (full aperture), at 1:1 life size would have an effective f-stop of F/5.6 because of the magnification. Any lens that magnifies, spreads out the light and the real f-stop setting is not really the amount of light reaching the sensor. At longer range, the f-stop does represent the amount of light being recorded.

In my optical tests of all the Nikkor lens ever produced, this 105mm F/2.5 does provides its best performance from F/2.8 to F/5.6.

Stopping down any excellent lens too much results in a compromise of its definition.

Best Regards,  Mike

Very good. That is one fine lens you are using. I got the Tamron 90mm many moons ago. I am happy with it but probably should have spent the extra bucks to get this one.

Mike - did you do any tests on the Sigma 10-20mm?
