I think that your first step is in the right direction.  Very good use of light and nice composition.

The lighting works well and the skin tones are excellent . There is a tad too much dead space on the left for my taste and I would tone down the white on the bottom edge . Otherwise , a marvellous portrait . Bill

I also like this image very much, Julia. The effect of her face floating over the background, with just a bit of texture still in her blouse, works well. The negative space helps show the isolation well.
