I'm not distracted by the background, but wonder whether others are.

Since this is a caged animal, I'm not able to get an open savanna or

similiar environmental background. Thoughts and comments are

appreciated.

I dont think the background distracts, if anything the blackness almost highlights the leopards face.

I agree with Hevalo. Also, a little tweaking of the levels curve would give the image a lot more "pop".
