I love the space alotted to the river in this picture.  You have created a vertical panorama that gives a great sense of dimension to your shot.  Great work!

I read your bio and respect that you don't like using software to enhance your photos.  So, I'll limit my comments to camera set-up and composition.

I like that you manually exposed this.  Besides a small aperture, you should consider other ways to slow the shutter (so the water appears like it's moving rather than "frozen") and improve saturation, such as: using a polarizer, using a neutral density and/or ND grad filters (to balance the rocks with the trees), and using the lowest ISO (I think it's 200 for the D5000).  These things would mean that you'd likely need to use a tripod.

Re composition, I like the lead line of the creek.  Unfortunately, it leads to a treeline that is not so interesting.  The sun is hitting the rocks and many appear dull and washed out; waiting for the sun to go behind a cloud can sometimes help with that.  Also, you should be careful about the placement of and intrusion of partial trees and shrubs.  I realize this can be difficult sometimes because the D5000's viewfinder frame coverage is about 95%.
