tomm 0 Posted June 19, 2003 This bird is shot at sunset and 1/5000 created a total freeze. Some would argue a slight blur would be more appropriate to get the sense of motion. Any opinions? Link to comment
anis 0 Posted June 19, 2003 I think, the freeze works really well here. The focus is spot on. Great work. - Anis Link to comment
bjmarkowitz 1 Posted June 19, 2003 You dont need the blur on the bird to get a sense of motion. You have that with the shallow depth of field. The freezing of the bird is awesome, and brings out the details in the feathers and the great colors. Love this pic. BTW, how did you do it? Link to comment
brendon_humphreys 0 Posted June 19, 2003 I agree that there is no need for the "movement blur" here. Great focus ! Link to comment
tomm 0 Posted June 19, 2003 The duck was having supper near my cabin. Returning to the water it usually follows the same path so I just made sure to be prepeared and walked slowly against it knowing it had to take off to my left to escape. The shot was made in direct evening sunlight at ISO 500 to boost shutter speed. I was a bit lucky since the two other frames in the 3-shot takeoff series was exposed at 1/2500 and the motion blur is there at that speed. I used a fixed aperture at f4 and follow-focus. The bird filled approx 50% of the frame. Link to comment
todd_clift 0 Posted June 20, 2003 No need for blur with the bird obviously in-flight. Or is he hanging from some stings? Just kidding :-) Great grab! Link to comment
john_brady 0 Posted June 20, 2003 Not the usual bird-in-flight photo. This one is sharper and much more interesting. Link to comment
t_cas70 0 Posted June 20, 2003 I can honestly say that I've never seen a pic like this! Excellent work. Link to comment
zcreem 1 Posted June 20, 2003 I had enough fun trying to capture some bees in flight the other day, now this is something special, what flash setting did you use, or is this really a no flash shot. One really small thought, I am best at them, perhaps the bird could do with a little more space, especially to fly into. I see you had some space to play with so only a thought, the shot itself stands as a great one well done. Regards Mark. Link to comment
karen_siebert 0 Posted June 20, 2003 This is wonderful. I like the frozen motion, it is unlike most other duck flight pictures. Absolutely tack sharp. Unbelievable capture, nice colors, and great depth of field choice. Excellent. Link to comment
david_montroy 0 Posted June 20, 2003 Technique, aestethics, the exact instant with the wings forward,... Perfect wildlife shot. Link to comment
armindo_lopes 1 Posted June 20, 2003 The pic has motion and sharpness. The blurred background just adds to the whole... Link to comment
crypticmystic 0 Posted June 20, 2003 Awesome as is. The sharpness and position of the wings is what makes this different from everyother bird in flight picture. Link to comment

tracywynn 0 Posted June 21, 2003 You made the right choice. You captured the perfect moment. And, most importantly, you got the duck's better profile. Link to comment
panzerwolf 0 Posted June 21, 2003 nice shot, excellent detail...the pose is a bit awkward, but with its facial "expression" it looks really funny = ) Link to comment

hayward 0 Posted June 21, 2003 With a 100 lens, he must have been close even with the 1.5x. It seems cropped, so he could have been close enought to touch. Did you use flash? It looks a bit like it. Very well done photo and congratualtions to you fo planning it out. I haven't gotten a bird in flight this sharp yet. You make me want to try. Link to comment
WJT 650 Posted June 22, 2003 aseptic study of avian flight dynamics. And it works perfectly well for me! Great job. Link to comment
