Hello Gail,

Great how you analyzed your shot;  I think the DOF is great here, Nowadays good cameras are forgiving if you are using not optimal ISO.

This is already a very good image, and if you follow Mike's advice I am sure the next macro's will be of top quality.

Well Done,
Ben

Very nice shot here, Gail; the shepherd and his flock. I especially enjoyed your description of your experience using your macro lens and what you learned in the process. I think pictures are only roadside markings of the route we travel. It's the learning and moving on that's the most important.

You are so right. I am trying to find more time to do 'practice work' but am trying to reorganize my work space, small room, but at least I have a room, but I always seem to be in a 'clutter'. After watching some of those shows on 'Hoarders' I get a bit scared when I CLIMB into my OFFICE!!! :-)

Always enjoy our chats, thanks for your visit and support,

Most sincerely, Gail

Many thanks for your visit, I know you appreciate good images and 'the process' Ben, so you can relate. Mike I am sure will always point me in the right direction. I guess from there, I have to find my 'way' a good deal on my own, but his help is so beneficial.

Tnks for your visit!!!! Talk soon, Gail

Gail,

Pretty darn good! I think you choice of f stop was correct, the green colour here is very appealing, perhaps the challenge with macro images of insects is to produce an image that is not simply a documentary shot but one that captures the insect in their natural envoirnment with appealing colours and composition, one that does not elicit sounds of repulsion from the viewer. Too much detail will tend to do this.

thank you so much John for those kind remarks. I have much to learn about Macro and your comments do make sense. I have one shot I really want to post, but it has a 'dead' frog in it, but for some reason, the surrounding of the frog have made it a half decent image, but like you say, who wants to repulse the viewer. You make good sense and I appreciate your visit and you sharing your thoughts with me.

Kindest regards, Gail

Joes' Aphid Adventure : - )

But no, I shall resist the temptation to divert away from this very well presented image into my usual fantasy land and instead attempt to add my 2 pennies to the rich pool of knowledge and advice already in evidence.  As Jim already mentioned the f stop you chose wasn't bad at alll. Things to watch out for are your focus point and the angle of your subject. With a comparatively shallow DOF using the likes of f2.8 it can be quite limiting in terms of composition, if for instance you want the foreground in focus as well as the main subject. This partcicular image is well focused on Joe : - ) as the main protagonist, but an alternative shot would have been the foreground aphids in sharp focus as well as Joe. Much depends on your own interpretation and vision of how you want the shot to look, and I encourage you to take the bull by the horns and have a fiddle about with the manual settings, by bold experimentation you will continue to learn. Personally I really like this, the colours are really well defined without being overdone. I think your continued progress is very much in evidence here Gail. Very well done!

Warm Regards

Alf
