The composition and colour in this image are great, what lets it down is the depth of field or lack of, i think the foreground suffers because of this. Perhaps a different fstop would have produced an excellent image.

Hi Richard, thank you for the interest. The stop here is “2”. Of course, I have done this photo with all possible stops up to “8” and foreground there is more clear, but the max open aperture gives us something different. Best wishes.

The lighting and composition are superb, but I agree that the lack of depth leaves more to be desired with this photo.

I'm not sure of your setup, but knowing that you shot this at f/2 explains quite a bit about why you have such a shallow depth of field.  I would have preferred this shot at f/8 - f/11 with a slower shutter to achieve similar lighting.  Likely you would have needed a tripod to make it work and I'm not sure how you were set up for this shot.

Hope this helps

I really like the composition and lighting.  Regarding the DOF, I think I'd have to see f/2 and f/8 - f/11 side by side.  Frankly, this looks pretty good to me, at least at this size.  However, I'm suspect, as my own experience has led me to prefer a deep DOF rather than shallow in landscape photographs such as this.  I think it's just hard to bring proven DOF principles and aesthetics that work for people and apply them in the same manner to landscapes.  That's just a tentative conclusion derived from my own attempts to shoot large landscapes at wide apertures.

Without getting into technical details, I believe that visually, this is a stunning image. You get the audience' attention. You see a beautiful, mysterious, colorful, peaceful sight. I think sometimes that is all that matters. A classic solo picture of a lonely tree, a desolated landscape. Not much more one can ask for. You have a winner here. Congratulations.

Thank to all of you for the interest. I did not expect this, because the subject in this photo is too “classical” and not very interesting.

I am not an expert, but may be there is some kind of  “3D” effect here (f=2.0). The reason for this can be the spot light in the center – vignetting.

Best wishes.

I actually like the f/8 version slightly better if only for the foreground being sharper...but we're splitting hairs here.  It's all a matter of artistic preference and you're the photographer.

Again, wonderful image.  The lighting and composition are supurb.
