Hi Bob,

I can imagine the smell of fresh wood, nice visual here.

The background blur works, as the primary focus is on the ax and foreground.

The entire scene could have remained in focus, even with the lens shot wide open (say F/3.5), by manually selecting a different point of focus. Then the DOF would be balanced about the plane of best focus allowing more clarity from front to back.

It takes some practice to learn how the lens functions with the f-stop selected.

For most of my work with wide angle lens or zoom lens set to wide angle, I shoot them at full aperture for clarity and use my working distance , perspective and manual focus set to make it all work.

Best Regards,  Mike

I get to this image again. I was 12-13 year old, (or young?) after the second world war, I was splitting wood with axle like this, or sometime much biger the this, for the fire place, helping Mother, 3 younger brothers after me, father working far a way from home, but not an easy wood what you photographed here. Wate or Locus-tree, witch is  very hard to split. Sorry for getting to nostalgic.

Cheers.
