This is a beautiful image, very artistic! A dear friend use to answer the why questions with WHY NOT! but I give you why I know I started with the series, I feel very insecure about which one is the best soooo I post a few of the ones I like.  Thanks for asking and making me explore my insecurities.

very creative and very nicely done.  You have all my vote on this one.  Impressive and minimalistic.  Humm

no problem Tony...since I have enjoyed some of your previous photo's I will gladly comment on this one...it is hard to critique a photo like this, I just go on what I find pleasing or not to my eyes...i can see how others enjoy this image but I did not find it strong enough to give you the 6 or 7 rating that many other's gave you...if you would like, in the future, if I come across one of your photo's that I would rate a 4, I will not rate it and only give you 6's and 7's on the one's I feel warrants the score...hope that helps...K.C.

Tony-

The more I look at this, the more entranced I become. How'd you do this? It looks kinda like a high key flower, but your effect makes it look like it's made from smoke- Wow!

this is an interesting idea.  It looks very catchy, though I'm not very fond of the black colour in there.  Somehow it looks too hard for such soft wisps; also, the black doesn't fit the theme - I can't remember seeing a black flower/plant.  Cheers, Micheal

Katie - I appreciate the time you took to comment. I would not dare try and tell people how to rate or under which conditions they should rate. When i put an image up for rating, I have no expectations but i do have hopes - probably the same hopes that most photographers here at PN have. We all know that there are no guidelines to ratings but I HOPE that people will rate honestly and more important for a photographers growth, tell them what they like or disliked about an image.

I recently found out that when a photographer here at PN sees an image that looks like it has been processed with Photomatix or other HDR software and has an HDR look, it is a 3 rate. I have also seen another photographer write here at PN who gives a 3 if he feels he has seen this type of image over a hundred times no matter the quality or aesthetic value.

Pn says a 4 is average and what does average mean? it means lots of different things to different people but guided by a dictionary it means "usual' or "typical".

My interpretation is;

1. it is a numerical value that sits in the middle of photo.net's rating range.i.e. 'middle of the road" -

2. not bad, not good, nothing special, seen hundreds of similar images like this.

3. An image that looks like it was a snapshot.

In my humble opinion (IMHO) I did not think this was a typical or average image and reiterate, my HOPE is that i would get constructive feedback.

I have made the decision to only rate 5, 6 or 7 (see my profile) and if i am thinking of rating lower, I prefer to write a constructive comment on my likes and dislikes or pass it by if i have time constraints. This approach is not for everyone and I  do not wish to influence you in any way. What you do is strictly your choice.

What i have written here is intended to be constructive and part of my natural character to dialogue. I also have selfish reasons for dialogue.  Hopefully I will get more constructive feedback that will allow me to improve my photographic skills.

All the best and keep up your fine work,

I have not heard fro you in quite a while and it is good to get your input on this. Think about the black areas as shadowed areas representing the stalk. Imagine (wonderful song by the way) the plant being backlit giving radiance to the floral section and shadows in places where I fear to tread (*_*). I have to get a V8 juice right now. (private joke between Micheal and I).

All the best and blessings,

OK, OK, I approve the V8 juice shot.  Why not grey for the stalk?  Grey is more gentle.  Cheers, Micheal

OK Micheal - and just for you, I will experiment with some grey instead of black, sit back and see if I like the result.

Even though this is a type of "High key" (large percentage is white) type image I still try to incorporate a wide color tonal range in most of my images - from the darkest colors to the lightest.
