In my opinion, the dark tonality, taken together with the smooth appearance of the ocean, conveys both mystery and calm.  The lighthouse offers either solace to a lost sailor or deception in allowing one to think that safe harbor is to be gained simply by fixing on it.

Your landscapes continue to dazzle me.  This one is no exception.

I like your analogy of Solace V Deception, its a thought provoking observation. I can see your reasoning too, the lighthouse like some kind of mystical siren, beckoning unsuspecting vessels to thier doom, a darker side, but one worthy of contemplation.

Great shot of South Stack showing the isolation and loneliness of the lighthouse with lovely evening shades. Was there in May doing the Anglesey Coastal Path but didn't have such beautiful light as you have displayed.

Hi Alf. You really do know how to work with colours! This is my favourite colour blue. Beautiful lighting and composition. The lighthouse just completes this image and gives it the isolation effect. When i feel brave enough I might try and post some landscapes (after having another look through your tutorial!)

What a gorgeous BLUE photo, Alf ( and blue is my favorite color as well:-) I very much love the quiet, slightly otherworldly mood of this.... Although I think that your composition is perfect as is, I tried eliminating the LHS of the image to make it a  square format, and to tell you the truth, I personally think that it looks very nice that way.... Anyway, that's just my thinking... (of late, I have been working more with the square format myself :-)   As already stated above, the overall mood of the photo is beautifully captured..! Many thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback John. I was about to give up, I had been to the "Church in The Sea" further up the coast and it just looked very ordinary without the tide being in. So I headed up to South Stack, I didn't hold out much hope of getting a decent shot as I've always struggled with this location, but this time I was quite pleased with the result. I think it was all to do with the time of the evening and as you say, the light in particular.

Many thanks for your visit and kind words, it was that "isolation effect" that i wanted to capture so its really gartifying tp learn that the image conveyed that impression.  You really should try a few more landscapes, you have a great eye, and the ones of the snow last year were really good. I should write another tutorial with a few updates as theres one or two things I missed on the last one relating to DOF and hyper focal distance.

It comes in any colour you like Marjolein.......as long as its blue : - ) Many thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback, very much appreciated. I tried the square format as you suggested, and in all fairness I have to say it looked good, that is to say the image still retained an aesthetically pleasing composition and even conformed to the "rule of thirds" although for me, the sense of space and solitude is somewhat diminished. You have kind of got me wondering though, if the human eye can see more within a square format space than a landscape shaped image......I suppose its all to do with peripheral vision, if anyone can answer that one, feel free to enlighten me : )

I'm so sorry I'm late getting to this one Alf, I think it is rather beautiful. The POV adds extra impact for me, my eye is drawn to the lighthouse, always a source of hope to those seeking a 'way home'. The blue tones are lovely also in this image. Fantastic sky, almost irridescent sea, beautiful!!

Its one of those places that holds some kind of special power that words fail to describe and even the image doesn't capture. It is remote and exposed to the elements yet life thrives here so vigorously its difficult to comprehend.  I love your analogy " a source of hope for those seeking a way home" It could apply to all of us at some time in our lives.

neat blue hue here! great compo with the lit lighthouse. i've never took any time-laps shots like this before. i need to start cos this is amazing!

Many thanks for your interest and positive feedback. You can get some great effects with long exposures particularly when there is a moving element such as the sky and water in this case, along with static elements like the rock and the lighhouse, you just need low light, and / or a filter, and a small enough aperture, plus a tripod of course. Then click the shutter and experiment with different apertures and filters until you have the optimum combination.
