dennis lee 0 Posted May 16, 2003 Big swells off the coast of Washington State would create big lumbering rolls on this Maritime Academy training ship. I was able to get this one frame off before they broke up the inspection. The guy on the far left kills me, I'd like to crop him out because he didn't keep his feet together (what kinda sailor...!) and disrupts the lean. Everytime I try the crop it just doesn't feel right. What do you think? Link to comment
reed_caster 0 Posted May 16, 2003 Dennis, leave it as is and don't sweat the the unstable seaman. My first attempt at altering this photo proved a failure. Your photo is quirky and I kind of like that. I tried straightening the sailors to show the ship pitching as it would have been - boring. It looked like a pitching ship. This raises an interesting perspective. It does not actually depict the correct orientation in relation to the horizon but it is a correct relationship between sailors and deck. I like it. alex_taylor 0 Posted May 16, 2003 This is hilarious! I love how there's no real horzion line or point of reference, and since you've framed it with the ship level to the frame it looks like they're leaning that way on purpose. Wonderfully done! Link to comment
gareth_harper 0 Posted May 18, 2003 Brillant! Great printing too. I'd be tempted to try and print it lining up the air intakes for symmetry if that was possible. Link to comment
bryan_clapper 0 Posted May 19, 2003 Great use of straight lines to show the effect of the tilting ship. Link to comment

guenther_dirks 0 Posted May 25, 2003 My head keeps rotating to left and back to right. I feel like I'm on board of this rolling ship. For me, this makes a perfect a photo. Link to comment

jack_lo_..._t_o 0 Posted July 1, 2005 Very very funny, I think I'd get a chuckle out of this one for years if it were on my wall. To me the poor guy on the left kinda makes the picture. Without him, a non-sailor would assume it's just a buncha guys leaning in unison-a smiler; but his unsteadiness adds a little reality-"whoa-oa". He's Jerry Lewis and they're the extras. Landrum Kelly 64 Posted July 16, 2005 Great shot, Dennis. I like the guy in the middle, too, who has curved his body to try to stay erect vis-a-vis the ship. I see that you made your own adjustment with the camera while also leaning your body--no small feat. Tell the guy at left to keep his eyes on the horizon! --Lannie Link to comment
