JAGGED EDGE

I love these incredible landscapes of yours that  transport me to another more enchanting time and place. I can smell the fresh, cool, untainted air and I half expect to see Polar Bears lumbering across the ice in the background. This scene is very peaceful and tranquil.The light in the clouds is delightful. The little puff balls of snow in the dark water are perfect. Beautiful work!

Many thanks for your interest and positive feedback. I was very fortunate that the low clouds kept passing in front of the sun, all I had to do was compose the shot and wait a few minutes for the clouds to diffuse the sun again and  "click"

I have now purchased a Nikkor 14 -24mm F2.8 lens slightly faster and wider than the 16 - 35mm F 4, but one of the reasons I decided to change was because of the slightly uneven distortion that I sometimes experienced with the 16 - 35.  Interesting suggestion as a back lighted image, I think you might be right, I'd be interested to see this one printed myself.

If I thought there was the slightest chance that I'd encounter a Polar Bear, I wouldn't get out of the car : - )  I am told that these creatures are the only animals on our planet that will actively hunt a human being for food. Scary thought that! Thankfully there is nothing anywhere near as dangerous in the uK, the worst that could happen in winter is being robbed by a hungry seagull when near the shore : - )  I think bears are far more likely to inhabit your neighborhood Linda, its all that brillaint fishing you have available nearby : - )

But I know what you mean, this is a special place, the remains of a glacier and its surroundings can have a most soothing effect, and yeah, makes you feel at one with nature.

Alf, this is a really beautiful image. The blue tones of the clouds and snow work really nicely with the brown and black tones of the water. The line of the ice is very nice leading us to the background and as a transition from the the darker tones to the lighter tones. 

Breathtaking! I read you mentioned getting in the water to capture this Magnificent view and it most certainly paid off since what you captured here was a view to treasure and keep safe. Also, hopefully you had "gum boots" on otherwise you feet must have been frozen as well. Amazing, how the clouds are reflected here in the bottom left hand corner of this capture. I can almost feel the crispness and cold of the air and the quiet in the area away from all city noise. Thank you so much for sharing the beauty you captured of Mother Earth. Warmest Regards

You tend to end up in glorious places, and all my snapshots look humdrum in comparison.  Brilliant blues here.  Warmer than would be expected given the snow.

It was the line of ice that inspired me to get into the water and get the shot, there was no safe vantage point amongst the hidden boulders on the shore, and I didn't want foreground snow. I was fortunate with the light, just waiting for the right moment when the clouds difffused most of the sunlight.

Sincere Thanks for your most generous comments and positive feedback.  Yeah I did climb into the water, it was simply the safest and best place to get a good composition. I was wearing Neoprene wellingtons, they are brilliant, you just don't feel the cold and they comfortable enough to walk in too. You are right about the crisp cold air, I think it might be that which aided the clarity of the scene.  The snow was about 18" thick on the slope we climbed to get to this spot and again you are very perceptive because the silence was most apparent. I am really pleased you liked this Johanna.

It's just an illusion Jeff, it didn't feel that glorious at the time, I'd fallen over 4 times, squashed my sandwiches and got snow in me left wellie  : - )  When we finally got there it was worth it though. It was one of those days of infinately variable light, the transient low clouds ever changing.

"snapshots"  and "humdrum" ...........when I can achieve images and  B & W's of the calibre and quality you produce I'll be very happy to have my snapshots look humdrum also : - )

Alf, I was cleaning my windows today. There were kitty nose prints all over the inside and bear nose and paw prints on the outside.  We live in bear country, we live with black and brown bears lumbering around the neighbourhood. We are long way from the Polar Bears. I have never seen a Grizzly in our area, but they are occasionally seen and last week one killed and ate a woman in the mountains. Our little bears can be a nuscance, and although many people are terrified of them, they rarely attack people.

William and Kate are visiting in Calgary, Alberta,Canada at the moment. Are you watching the coverage? Canadians are absolutly mad about them and their every movement has been televised.   

The wise use of the low light Alf create a wonderful atmosphere...

It is an outstanding image of a rare landscape, perfectly composed with great depth and natural colors.....

This is a fabulous shot.  Excellent blue tones, the light in the clouds and the reflection of it in the water, make this a very strong picture.

The composition is fantastic, it leads the eye.  The water leads the eye to the lighter area in the clouds, then over the mountain tops to the other light area.

I would never have tried it in BW, but also that works well.

I didn't find Peter Pan, but maybe at 4:30 AM that might be normal :-)

The environment you live in must be truly amazing, I get quite excited if I see a hedgehog or a fox, I can't imagine what its like being in close proximity to the creatures you mentioned, particularly bears. I imagine that you have to treat even black and brown bears with a healthy respect.

William and Kate are never out of the news over here, showing them doing just about everything in Canada from canoeing to landing a helicopter on water. I'm not a "Royal" fan, but I must admit William & Kate do seem more likeable than most.  I wonder if they will encounter any bears : - )

Beautiful, majestic image and an excellent comp.  Most pleasing to view on a hot July day......or any day, for that matter.  I really like the light too.  The snow covered rock in the foreground definitely holds your eye in the composition.  Nicely done.

As has been mentioned, the lighting is stunning both at the base of the snow mountain and at the clouds. Also, the stones covered with snow is a beautiful sight to see against the darkly rendered collection of water. A completely outstanding image, Alf. - Lester
