I caught this ghost mantis molting yesterday. The picture is rotated

180 degrees. When I first saw him, he was still hanging out of his old

skin, but by the time I got my camera together he was standing next to

it trying to push it off.

This is a fantastic shot Scott. It is crisp and clear, very dramatic in sepia, nicely composed, and very original.  I didn't know that mantis molted. When I first looked at this I thought this was two insects fighting and looking like two aliens battling it out. Excellent work!

Never seen something like that! Surprising, astonishing, awesome. Inspiring? Where would I find the mantis who needs new cloths? Karl

Thanks everybody.  Karl, you would find this particular one in my aquarium.:)  First time I've ever shot directly into my flash before.

Just amazing. Fascinating, beautiful, and educational too.

I'm not sure, though: Is it the shorter fella who is the "old skin"?

This is a great photograph. I gave it 7/7, which I rarely do. Everything about it is great. The concept is original and intriguing and it's technically very well executed. I find most of your staged mantis work somewhat cheesy (just my personal opinion), but I really like this one. I can't imagine a better way to capture the beauty/strangeness of this animal.
