I waited and waited, while the peak of Mt Assiniboine never shown up, I got

some good light though. Please click on image to see larger. Thanks!

Breathtaking scenery well captured.  You have an amazingly well balanced exposure on this shot given the weather condition (clouds) and the time of day. Is this a single exposure relying on the grad filter only? or did you blend several exposures into one? I notice in the EXIF that you took this at 17 mm focal length. I have the same lens/ camera combination and i find at 17mm, i get significant fringing and distortion on either sides of the frame.  Do you notice this too? (at this scale its is not possible to see whether it is happening in this image).  Nice work and impressive results.  Regards - michel

Hi Michel,

This is a single exposure with Lee 2 stop hard ND grad aligned at top of the mountains. (The only peak that protruded into dark area of the filter was blocked by clouds) I did a slight dodge on central peak but that it is. There is no fringe on this one as nothing was at extreme contrast edge, but I do see fringes on some of my other shots especially with branches against bright sky. As I only shoot raw, it is quite easy to fix in raw processing software (I use SilkyPix). As for distortion, it's a problem with any ultra wide lens, I usually avoid pointing my camera too high or low if there are straight vertical lines near edge,  I'd rather point the lens relatively horizontal and then crop the the frame to meet my composition idea.

Thanks,

Henry

Thanks Henry for your detailed explanation.  This is really a great shot and you demonstrated impressive technical skills to get it.  Regarding the lens, i recently acquired CS5 in part because of the lens correction feature which is incorporated in ACR .  The feature is not new it's been around for a while but what is new is that you can now dial in your particular lens and the program has presets to correct such things as chromatic aberration and distortion automatically. I hope it will improve the results i get with this already great lens. Thanks again for your reply.  Regards - michel
