The first thing you might notice is that you are using a dark background and the subjects have dark hair (especially the man)  Therefore hair blends into background.  There are two ways to remedy this.  One would be to use a lighter background, the other would be to use accent lights or hair lights hitting the head from behind (at an angle) to separate them.  The same thing happens to the man's shirt against the background.  I upload an example to show what the accent lights can do in separating hair from background.
