American Kestrel scares up some grub (reposted as several suggested, thanks) This is a female American Kestrel with a large larvae, likely that of a Figeater Beetle. These little falcons, arguably the most beautiful, sit on a high spot while searching the area for any movement among the leaves. When they detect motion, they swoop down and start digging until the target is located. I think it's like candy to them. No bones, feathers etc. just good old skin and ... yeah.

Outstanding! The detail is amazing, when I looked at this larger I can see that is perfectly in focus. I tried to figure out what he has in his talons, it looks like a small shell or a large grub. Best wishes, Linda

Hi Steve,

The optical performance is there for your 500mm F4 used with a 1.4X teleconverter. Just a guess because your data indicated 700mm focal length at F/5.6.

Wonderful image.

Nice work as usual.

Amazing detail in the large view, strangely the normal view seems almost blurred by comparison, something I've noticed with one or two of my own uploaded shots when they have been optimised for the larger view.  But this is exquisite by any standard, perfect fan of the tail and wings and the usual superb dof. Excellent shot Steve.

Regards

Alf

PS. You must eat some strange candy : - )
