A gorgeous capture here.  Biding your time with this crane and waiting for the definitive moment really paid off.  The talons emerging from the water display a wonderful dynamic possessed with energy, while the shroud of feathers around the body suggest almost a still life.  A very nice balance that you have achieved here.  It is also worthy to note the beautiful compliment of the water with the deep violet of the feathers.

In my own experience on the West coast of Canada, cranes make excellent subjects.  I've found that they have a very keen sense of who and what is in their territory and will take to flight at the slightest start or movement.  A telephoto is almost always required for close-ups.  Howevever, the cranes around here have the habit of standing perfectly still while resting in the waves just off-shore.  This makes them splendid subjects of a long-exposure photo as you can let the waves blur to a soft swirl while the silhouette of the bird remains perfectly crisp and clear.  Hard to work with but well worth the effort in my opinion.

Congratulations on an excellent picture.
