Mai is a girl I met here in HCMC, Vietnam. She has done some part

time modelling and was very professional and worked well in front of

the camera. I have many great shots from the few days that we worked

together. This is one of my favorite ones.

I would like some feedback on composition, lighting, overall impact etc.

Cheers

Philip

Philip,

Mai is a beautiful girl. You have focused well on her eyes . Her skin tone, the color saturation and contrast are excellent. Having her tilt her head down creates a very nice pensive mood.

The bright yellows in the picture draw my attention away from Mai's face.

Having everything in focus makes the background look very busy and Mai just becomes one of the objects in the photograph.

The large wheel next to her is overpowering. It becomes the subject.

Perhaps if Mai was in front of the cart and you allowed everything behind her to go out of focus it would work better.

Even though the wheel is next to her it doesn't balance the composition. It is not important enough to the subject (Mai) to compensate for the perceived "weight" of the person in the photograph. Putting her off center makes your compositional balance a little right heavy.

Her hat is interesting, but I don't see it as having the importance you have given it. The placement of her hat looks a bit contrived. If she was holding the hat at he side it would make more sense to me.

You do not want anything in your photograph that draws attention away from your subject. It would be quite appropriate to place you name and the date the photograph was made, if you wish, on a mat surrounding the photograph. Photo.net even places your name as the photographer right under your photograph.

Nice shot,

Mark

I love the mutual reminder between the wheel and the hat. Ilove also the mutual link between the  yellow of the flowers and the yellow of the girl dress . The composition is very good. A grat shot I suppose.

Mai certainly has that "deep thinking" expression.  I love the overall composition of colour mix, still objects, and calmness of her pose.

Well done.

As far as a composition, I think the girl should have been placed in front of the big wheel, so that the rim of her dress isn't covered. otherwise it is a very lovely portrait.
