Does this convey the effect of speed effectively?

I think it does. It would've had a better effect if the picture was shot horizontally giving a better sense of ongoing space and speed unless the cyclist is jumping in the air.

nice pic ivan and it does convey speed well,panned or ps work? and have you tried rear sync flash yet? if not then give it a try.

I was panning, but I'm not sure my flash would have helped becuase he was kind of far. I've never used flash with my 200mm. Maybe i'll try next time. No photoshop, just a little brightening up and increase in contrast.
