jerrymat 5 Posted February 22, 2011 Elena, I like the effect of a little color. It reminds me of the early attempts to colorize black and white prints using pigments. There are a few things that bother me quite a bit. One is that her hair is so black that it has lost the sense of texture and is blending into the black elements behind her. It is, essentially, underexposed. The other is the dark black-eye look (as though someone had punched her) Early black and white movie films sometimes have this because they were shot on red-color blind film and anything warmish got dark and because the actors were using makeup the way it had been done in vaudville and traveling shows. They rubbed warm colored accent makeup around inside the eye sockets and it photographed as black. It is amusing in early silent films but I am not sure why it was done here. You call this "the look of love" but it conveys a different message to me. She looks frightened that the man who has been beating her is returning.Jerry Link to comment
