Cotton Clouds (three), Circa 1991

smhickel

This is the third of five (found more) photos of the same sky. Michigan is noted for its severe weather. This sky came to be after some rather large thunderstorms had come through the area.

I know you wouldn't make them up. Just teasing you. They are the weirdest clouds I have ever seen though.

What a truly unique image! The pattern reminds me of that made by a disco ball. Surreal image.

Thanks Craig. Yours appear to be thicker and denser whereas these were lighter and more clear air around them. Would they still be called the m. word?

Yup. Definitely qualify as mammatus. One thing I forgot to mention was that the turbulence associated with these cloud formations can be severe. Up and down drafts play a major role in their creation. Ah nature!

I remember the night. The weather was ominous and I believe there was a threat of tornados. Thanks.
