This image surely must be the very epitomy of suspense, mood and atmosphere. There is a delicious combination of detail and shadow, with the old stone building and and the wall lamp adding to the scene. The figure itself approaching, the raised footfall, getting closer ...........like a scene from a film.....or "The Avengers ...The Gas Light Ghoul Club" Circa 1965.

Beautiful capture. Has an "Alfred Hitchcock" feel to it for me but that is because I am not familiar with inspector Javert.

Your image so evocative of a old  Gothic movie. I wish I could recall the movie I recently watched that it brings to mind I remember the story but not the name It was some obscure pick I found and enjoyed to the utmost. Oh Oh O I almost have was it a Woody Allen flick? Arrrrgh.  It really does not matter: great image.
