Cholla Cactus Garden

brad_biringer

Ten minutes after sunrise, I captured this image using a graduated neutral density .9 filter. The slope of the hills give the appearance that the image horizon is crooked, however, the camera was parallel to the ground. The contrails in the sky are courtesy of the military jets from the nearby Twentynine Palms Marine Base.

The peeking sun and backlit "glowing" bits are nice details, especially in contrast to the black-silhouette. Level or not, I find the sloping horizon distracting, nor do I think the jet trails add any value. How do you feel about cropping into a square, starting from the left side? Youll lose a lot of the expansive, three-dimensional look, but youll intensify the boldest parts of the photo.

I love the Mojave desert, but contrails gotta go. Around Joshua Tree they coulda' been from China Lake, Edwards AFB or Area 51...?

I like this Brad. Soft tones and a colorful sky make this one nice. Neither the horizon nor the contrails bother me with this. Still, if horizon is an issue to others, it can be easily rotated in Photoshop. Good one.
