This long weekend I took the opportunity to head down to the Snowy

Mountains, so see if by chance, I could capture the spring time melt.

Well, as fate would have it, I was lucky enough to have the perfect

conditions; patchy snow, incredible sky and strong directional light

casting red hues over the alpine grass.

Capturing this image was bit of an adventure. We originally drove up to

telephone box junction on Mount Stirling (from Mansfield on the way to

Mount Buller) to find the road to Craig’s Hut closed. Not to be perturbed,

we set off on the 15-20km walk up to the hut. 5km into the walk we

realised that we would miss the sun set over Craig’s Hut. We chucked a

quick u-turn, then made the decision to follow one of the cross-country

ski trails up to the top of Mount Stirling. 2 hours and 5km later after

walking through snow (in running shoes!) found us on top of Mount

Stirling with the sun casting magical light across the top of Australia.

Absolutely magical. Incredible. This is the reason I love landscape

photography.

After capturing sun set for a couple of hours, we walked the 5km

through the snow, in the dark, to get back to the car. Dodgey, yes!

Would I do it all over again? Of course!

This can't be fully appreciated unles viewed in the larger display.  The light is the star in this photo and your timing was excellent.  I wish for a little more detail in the distance on the left, but this is a minor thing for an excellent photo.
