Admitedly, this is a little unnatural - that was intentional. The scene was

originally very flat. Taken from the side of the road overlooking a salt marsh

@ St. Simons Island... about 10 minutes before the sky opened up on us.

I'm trying to figure out what's unnatural about it.  You were there, I wasn't.  I suspect the clouds were pretty heavy overhead, and perhaps the ground didn't have as much light as you've shown.  However, I've seen plenty of approaching storms that had open sky and sun in the other direction, and light like this is not unusual in those circumstances.  I think this is all about the sky and clouds.  If you had raised your camera (seeing the hint of dark cloud in the upper left), that might have been interesting as well.
