A moody picture i like.Would have even been better without the shore in the foreground.Looking closer i see the shore 'counterbalances ' the clouds.

Thank you Andreas.  You are exactly right in your interpretation of my intentions, leaving the foreground element to balance the dark cloud above. This is a salt lake (about 3 times saltier than the ocean) so it doesn't freeze but near the shore where fresh water springs flow the water is brackish. The lighter fresh water rises to the surface where it almost instantly freezes to a slushy consistency.  What you see in the foreground is that frozen fresh water.

An eye catching photo.  I agree, the shore and the clouds almost add a natural vignette to the scene (they augment the vignetting applied.)  Simple, uncluttered and elegant.  My favourite kind of shot.

Very interesting picture!
