This is a captivating and dramatic image of light use and tones, Alf. I love silhouette work, and the details of their nets and clothing add interest. I sense an eerie but peaceful mood. Wonderful work. It deserves 7/7.

Took me an hour to get here to write,...;-))  If I compare this one to the previous frame, this is my favorite.  All the aspects of a good photograph are present.The light, the colors and the wave movement probably because of  a light breeze, but especially the human life and movement on the bridge that animates the whole. Very nice and touching.

Re: a comment by another viewer.  While it's true that human activity when exploring the natural world can be disruptive or destructive, a set of ethical "rules" has been established to minimize this.  For example, beach explorers are taught to replace any rocks that are turned over when looking for intertidal creatures.  It's hard to imagine a less intrusive way to see some creatures that live in shallow water than by net-dipping and then returning them to the water.  Most importantly, when this activity is done to introduce young children to the natural world, the benefits of instilling such knowledge and appreciation cannot be overstated.  If only more families could have experiences like this -- the natural world that we want to protect would be so much better off.  And Alf and others would continue to get beautiful photos that also tell a story, leaving only a bit of water on the dock and memories that will last a lifetime.

Though everybody have said what is to be said about this photo, I will just add my admiration. This picture gave me a very good feeling of tranquility and beauty. Fantastic.

A fair and valid statement. The hardest part of communication by the written word, is that we continually have to interpret the words we read, without much in the way of emphasis or feeling, except of course for the contribution of punctuation which aids the former. It is with this in mind that I find it difficult to decipher if the said previous viewer was referring to "destruction" as to the peaceful mood of the image, or if indeed it was a reference to natural habitat as you have interpreted it. (As indeed I did myself in the first instance) Suffice to say that between us I think we have covered all bases. Thank you.

Alf, this is superb, a very simple scene but a wonderful story. I'm glad that you saw the opportunity that was presented. It has the lot - good graphic, good colour and a very touching story.

The family of three certainly give your image a great sense of their story, particularly with two of the nets clearly visible.  Then there are the ripples, of course.   A crucial element is the angle of the jetty leading in strongly from the left and then veering to the right.  There is a sense of a long distance to the interesting horizon.  However, one feels that the three adventurers are in a safe and happy place.

Hello Alf,

I really like this.  Tells a story even before you explained what was going on.  The composition is perfect, especially the way that the figures are alligned decending to the right.  You even got a nice reflection.  Still, I feel that the shot would not have been "complete" without the capture of the silhouette of the net against the lightest of the background.

Many thanks for your kind words and positive feedback. I have been guilty in the past of seeing opportunities like this with my eyes and not with my brain. I would see a great colourful sunset and ignore and even avoid the human elements. Thankfully I have come to realise that there are occaisions when man and the environment can interact favourably, from an aesthetic viewpoint.

Your summary is very accurate (except its a familly of 4 see answer to john above) The location is a very familly orientated place, and although the image gives the illusion of being near deserted, there are plenty of people still about, and lots of them like me, taking full advantage of the great colours, taking snaps with mobile phones etc.

I took about 8 shots as the familly moved around the jetty, it was difficult to get them seperately and indeed I didn't succeed entirely as there are 4 figures and you can only see 3 clearly, ( the 4th is behind "mum" and the hands reaching for the net are only visible), but from the shots I took, this one seemed to work best for sharpness and composition. I agree with your thoughts on the visible net too, but I have to concede I just got lucky there! : - )
