Stoney Broke in Whitby

This is so beautifully done Art.  Your digital art skills are so well showcased in this shot.  My mother was born in Whitby....Ontario....just a mere 7 minutes away from where I grew up.  But our Whitby is not nearly as picturesque at our harbour.  Lovely work that should be framed and displayed.....your son must be very proud of you Alf....you have achieved so much in such a short time.  Just lovely. Sincere thanks for your visit and feedback, I'm really pleased that your perception os the image is of a water colour as that was what I set out to achieve. The trick of bracketing 5 images in an enviroment of water or wind is to ensure a fast shutter speed. Ideally I'd love to try more HDR shots with low light conditions, but haven't found the means yet to braccket the shots without noticeable movement. I suspect the only way I could achieve this would be to try a pseudo HDR image as you have described to me by creating 3 or more exposures of the same image.

Thank you sincerely for your feedback, the painterly look was just what I wanted to achieve here and it worked quite well in Photomatix, the difficult part is applying enough contrast and sharpness in photoshop to give the image definition, without spoiling the effect, but I seem to have got it right this time. thanks again Michel!

Excellent final result. Romantic fishing village in water colors. This one really deserves a big frame and a nice wall...compliments Alf!

This photo has a painted quality to it that I like.

The saturation present in the boats seems a bit unnatural, but unnatural in a good way that brings attention to them. From there I find my eye dancing around the photo looking at the variety of colors in this photo (The green on the ladder and dock, the oranges on the houses, the red on the bridge etc etc).

However because of the gray overcast sky and the tones in the photo I see an alternate version of this photo when I look at it... namely high contrast b&w. So, (and I hope you don't mind Alf) I grabbed this to try and see if my vision would work. I worked with the curves and sharpened it up a bit and thought I might be onto something. I am limited without the RAW file so I am sure you could do a better job than I could but was pleased.

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent photo with nice color but I see b&w when I look at this.

No aplogies necessary Joe, in fact quite the reverse I thank you sincerely for taking the time and trouble to contribute this delightful B & W version. I have to admit it wasn't something I previously considered, but you have opened up great possibilities here for me to explore. You may have guessed (though you didn't mention it) that the image is a HDR. (5 bracketed images I EV spacing apart)  The early morning light was very flat so I thought a HDR might offer a painterly effect and that was what I was aiming for, which could account for the "unnatural saturation" of the boats.. I think the additional contrast and sharpness in the B & W brings out an entirely different mood, a great alternative version and one that also allows a bit more depth and detail in the far bank waterside buildings.

Hi Alf, Yeah I was able to deduce that this was HDR...and don't get me wrong I don't mean unnaturally saturated in a bad way. Actually the colors are quite nice in this photo and the bright colors of the boats make them the first thing you focus on when you look at this photo which is an excellent compositional element and your intention I am sure.

Hi Alf- We have a town of Whitby a few miles from from us & I can guarantee their harbour does not look anything like Stony Broke. There is nothing I could add that would improve on the many comments from the other viewers. I look at your image & I feel a sense of relaxation & peacefulness . It is just a visual pleasure to view this fine image. For a person only involved in photography for five years you must have been & are a very artistic person with strong technical skills. Humble apologies, I didn't see your response until just now.  The boats do stand out as being quite colourful, probably due to the more subdued hues of the  buildings and relatively flat light condiitons, but yeah it does seem to work.

"Stoney Broke" was the name on the middle little fishing boat ( I think) but its probably quite difficult to make out, and I can't remember what size I uploaded so maybe viewing it is almost impossible. It is visible of course on the fulll sized version. I am pleased you liked this one Ross, it's one that I like also, and it may or may not surprise you to know I don't like all of the images I post. As for the five years I've been involved in photography ...........well I have a son in law that is a great photographer and a patient teacher......add to that my enthusiasm, and I guess it was inevitable that I learned a few things. I count myself as being very fortunate.
