Full moon on Shipwreck Beach, Kaua'i

brad_biringer

I mounted a digital camera on a steady tripod, set the mode to "manual" with a 15 second exposure at f/7.1. The f/7.1 aperture marks a 1/3-stop opening more than f/8. This image was taken 10 minutes after the full moon rose above the horizon on a bluff overlooking Shipwreck Beach.

This certainly is unique in that this is a moon rather than sunset shot. I take it that the trees in the foreground are lit up by the hotel lights. That is what makes this image good in my opinion. I personally have had a difficult time getting my moon exposures to be just right. This is probably similar to what I have been getting in that the scene looks good, yet the moon is blown out. I have recently taken some with a graduated sunset filter that has really helped me get the details in the moon, AND have enough light to get the rest of the scene as well. Still the natural lighting of the moon is interesting, and this is over-all a very good capture.

great shot! the clouds and sky are great. the only thing that bothers me is that the moon got exposed so much and isnt circular due to the clouds. other than that though, its very nice.

Lovely image - congrats on taking the time and effort to try this! Moonrise, indeed. What an awesome scene - especially for anyone who's every been there and seen it ... i can almost smell the flowers and ocean.

ps.... thanks for rating my Reagan photos.
