g1 0 Posted March 19, 2003 At first I thought a very pleasant mood, with the ambience of night lighting, and the comforting feeling of going home after a long day - but then I spotted a guy in the darkness on the left! It spooked me and broke the spell! Nice shot, with more than meets the eye at first glance. Link to comment
markskelly 0 Posted March 19, 2003 I thought this might suggest a story of some sort. Any comments/ratings appreciated. Thanks! Link to comment
Guest Posted March 19, 2003 What Geraldine said, exactly! I'm wondering too, whether the floodlit arch over the entrance means there's an identical doorways the other side of the kiosk. Maybe a different composition with people going in and out of the two doorways: walking in step, rich vs poor, etc? Link to comment
yishai 0 Posted March 19, 2003 Good rendition of color. I like the shady person in the front, he looks like he's stalking the one passing through the passage. Link to comment
m_bailey 0 Posted March 20, 2003 Excellent color rendition. I had to adjust the gamma on my monitor to see the guy frame left, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one that it was my fault. Despite the fact that the composition is clearly bounded by the red bulb left, lit sign top, phone booth left it still leaves me a bit uneasy and I'm not sure why. I might have titled down and lost that top sign. Link to comment
chip l. 1 Posted March 20, 2003 Good shot over all. I would have gone tighter on the composition. Also would have maybe waited till the man emerged from the doorway more. Link to comment
mg 0 Posted April 13, 2003 I was about to propose to you the same crop as Chip. No point anymore, since he did it. Basically I like his attached version. It work better simply because the left side of the image isn't necessary to the spooky story which is the essence of the image; also because it forces the eye to concentrate on what's essential; and finally, because the crop allows you to throw the strongest line in the image (this vertical separation line between bright and dark areas) off the center. Then you have a classical rule of thirds that works great. I like the story that's going on here, and with the appropriate crop, I think we would be very close to a very good shot in both aesthetics and originality. Cheers. Link to comment
stever 0 Posted October 30, 2003 Hi Mark,A very good photo!Chip's crop is good, but I also like the original, as the dim red glow adds to the mysterious feeling coming from the left half of the image.I think there is also a third, perfectly good photo in your image (see the cropping I uploaded), although it lacks the impact of yours and Chip's - no real mystery involved. Yes, there definitely is a story here - there's something Hitchcock-like going on. Your choice of the high viewpoint heightened the feeling of telling a story. I hope you or some of our comrades here can come up with some story ideas.Grand Central is one of my very favorite structures in Manhattan - thanks for posting such a great photo taken there.Best regards,SteveR Link to comment
