I arrived at Steptoe Butte at 6:00 AM after a 50-minute drive, only to find the

top shrouded in fog. I decided to explore on foot at a lower elevation and found

this interesting scene. After returning home and working it up, I realized that

this tree has been featured in several other (color) photos posed here. It is

rather striking, standing alone in a landscape almost completely converted to

agriculture.

Beautiful black and white of this area Jim. You were blessed with dappled light. One of my favorites so far from this spot. Ry

George, Richardo, and Ryan,

Thank you for your comments. Ryan, as you well know, the dappled light can make waiting for the right moment exciting, but sometimes tedious. After leaving this site I found another shot that I liked, but the light patches were drifting everywhere except where I wanted them to be. After an hour or so the clouds cleared and the scene lost its appeal.

BYW, when I arrived and found the top of the butte socked in my first thought was "I bet this has happened to Ryan lots of times".

A favorite view of mine. Great to see it in B&W after all these years. I haven't made it our there in quite a while.

Jim, yes, this little tree is getting a lot of attention.  You were blessed with beautiful light, and the B&W is terrific.  This is superb.

Hello Radu, Nick and Stephen—

Thank you for your generous comments. It has not been a productive winter photographically, so I was happy to get out for a half-day and happier yet to produce a pleasing new image. Will have to go back and try again soon; let me know if you're ever in the vicinity, & we'll make it a field trip.

The converging slopes give this the illusion of a water's surface, sort of wavy. Without the fixed man made objects and the tree, it could fool the eye. This is sublime Jim!

etay and Mark,

Thank you for your comments. Mark, yes the Palouse landscape is unusual and offers some good opportunities for photography. I know I should make more local trips to take advantage of it (that is, I should follow your example, including getting out earlier!).

Massive, sprawling waves of light and terrain make for a very compelling, powerful yet peaceful image here Jim.  Terrific, rek.
