Guest Guest Posted May 17, 2010 Calvin,There is something so cute about this girl! Her face just lights up when she smiles. Her hair style fits the shape of her face perfectly. Her skin tone is very good. The exposure on her clothes is very good.It doesn't bother me (too much) that the background and the back of her arm and hoodie are overexposed. Her face is most important. Catch lights would give more life to her eyes.I would not show the back of her right hand. As you have done with her left hand, the edge (side) of the hand towards the camera is thinning, feminine and graceful.I would also crop some off the left side. Your subject should have more room in front of her than behind, but not quite this much. You do want to allow her to be facing into the picture, not out of it, but you also want to compositionally balance the left and right sides of the photograph. The compositional "rule" for this suggests that you position the tip of the subject's nose in the vertical center of the photograph.Nice shot,Mark Link to comment

whoz_the_man_huh 0 Posted May 18, 2010 Thanks for the very detailed feedback, Mark.I apologize for the blazing background. The sun was out in full force that day. Brutal. I found it difficult to shoot without sunglasses. Link to comment

david_l._forney 0 Posted May 19, 2010 Calvin, I think this is a fabulous image. I love her pose and expression. I like the fact that her face is bright despite the strong backlighting. The muted color treatment also works very well here. Mark does provide some valuable comments. I have read many of his reviews, and have learned from them. Here, however, I like the open composition in front of her, which makes the shot more editorial rather than a standard studio portrait. Also, while I don't prefer such a strong backlight, it works because it is the opposite of a typical well lit subject with a slightly darker background. The contrast makes the image. Shylee is just getting better and better at posing. She is adorable here. She should continue to be conscious of how she presents her hands and arms to the camera just the same way as she is conscious of how she presents her eyes and smile to the camera. Also, the more animated she is in front of the camera, the higher percentage of good shots you seem to get. I know you don't photoshop these, so as an untreated image, it's excellent. Thanks for sharing and brightening my day. David Link to comment
whoz_the_man_huh 0 Posted May 19, 2010 Thanks for the kind words, David!I often try to take your advice about deviating from the standard centered portrait. I also like the contrast you mentioned, but it was more due to the scorching sun rather than any artistic intentions my unsophisticated senses could develop. Heh.You're right, the post work is minimal. Learning Photoshop is my summer's resolution. Link to comment

alfbailey 4 Posted May 22, 2010 A delighful portrait despite the blazing sun, I think the sepia tones go a long way calming the effects of the sun, and contrive to illuminate the models face in a softer very becoming tone.Nice work Calvin!RegardsAlf Link to comment
whoz_the_man_huh 0 Posted May 23, 2010 I gotta agree with you about those calming effects, Alf! Sepia is my best friend when it comes to sun-drenched images like this one. Thanks for your kind and generous thoughts. Link to comment

whoz_the_man_huh 0 Posted May 26, 2010 This is the first time I've heard this characterized as good lighting, Chan, but thanks very much for your kind compliment. Heh. Link to comment
aarkp 2 Posted May 26, 2010 I guess the light in this photograph is 'difficult' but as it is 'harmonious' it is 'good'. The all-pervading sun is well-paralleled in Shylee's sunny disposition and carefree look. Link to comment
whoz_the_man_huh 0 Posted May 26, 2010 Nicely put, Rajat. She can be sunny and carefree to the point of appearing childlike at times. Link to comment
