The image is terrific...made even better with your story. Your antics paid off. Gorgeous light kissing Red. Wonderful composition with all your other glorious details. Sensational color...just perfect! More critter photos! More critter photos! More critter photos!

I love this! I take a lot of horse pictures. Not because I love horses, but because they happen to be in the pretty places. BUT I do/did feel your pain about yelling and jumping (if anyone saw me I'd probably be put away)....and I learned a little trick to get them to look. I keep a plastic jug in my car that I keep horses treats in it and when you shake it they look up...the bad part is they want to come to it and that messes with your composition. But if you shake it they will look up....then stop shaking...take picture...it's never easy and an assistant is great. But the important part is YOU GOT IT! And maybe this doesn't work on horses that never get treats from there owners.

Beautiful shot. Old Red in all his glory makes the lighthouse work in the composition. Nice color, lighting and sharpness. - Charles

Excellent composition from Llandwyn Island. Obviously great patience was employed to get the horse in the frame and facing the right way and a superb image was created. Very well done in capturing such a superb shot.

A scene from a movie, Alf. Dreamlike scenery, very well studied set and dreamlike final result. Everything else is said above. Remains for me: 'stunning', just 'stunning'

Many thanks, much appreciated.

TIFFANY

Thank you so much, I do have one or two more "critter photo's" from this same session, as there were three horses, but none of them wanted to co-operate, but I will post a ccouple more within the next few weeks. Cheers Tiffany I'm really pleased you liked it. I don't know if my "critter photo's" will become any more frequent, as people already question my sanity as it is. : - )

SREEHARI

I really appreciate your kind comments and observations, thank you for looking in.

VICKI

Thank you for looking in, the idea of the jug with treats in might work, but I'm not sure, as these horses roam free on the island, and I don't know if they would recognise a horse treat, might be worth a go though. An assistant .....now theres a thought......any volunteers ?.... : - ) Thanks again Vicki

Thank you for making of fool of yourself for our benefit! :-) Quite a funny story.....what we won't do as photographers to get 'the shot'. It was time well spent because you ended up with a magnificent image. I particularly like the unusual setting.......not your typical horse pasture, to be sure. Great work, Alf!

It was worth all the effort you put into it Alf, this is wonderful. It is very romantic and scenic. Beautiful colours, magnificent landscape, and well composed. I am curious about what kind of horse this is? Is it wild? It has quite a heavy coat. When I am going to shoot horses my husband brings carrots and apples and that always gets them to hold their heads up. But, then they quickly come over to get a taste, so you have to be fast. I really enjoy looking at your work. Best wishes, Linda

When it comes to photography, me making a fool of myself seems to be an occupational hazard, if you really enjoy a giggle read the foreword to the image "Higher Perches" (It's under Landscapes in my portfolio) I guarantee that will make you smile. After that particular incident, I grew somewhat immune to embarassment. : - ) Thanks for all your thoughts and comments Christal, much appreciated.

LINDA

Thanks for all your kind and encouraging comments Linda. I'm really not sure what type of horse it is, but there are three horses on the island that just seem to roam free, they all have the short stocky stature but are different colours, the others being white and grey, I'm no expert on horses but I think the breed could be a Welsh Mountain Pony, or a Welsh Cob, they certainly seem to be a tough breed as they exist on the very coarse grasses that grow on the island. Hopefully someone with a far more in depth knowledge of horse breeds will advise us accordingly. I shall remember the apples and carrots next time I go! : - ) Thanks again Linda.

KOUSHIK

Many thanks for your kind comments, I dread to think what the horse would tell his familly about the days events maybe something like >>> " I was stood there munching grass, minding my own business when a human come along and started making the strangest noises, I just carried on eating and pretended I didn't notice, but when he started dancing like an agitated baboon, I just had to look up!

I snickered my contempt at his unseemingly behaviour, then shook my head and walked away in dismay, humans ....I don't think they are from the same planet" : - )

Sincere Thanks To All

Hola Alf, despues de todo parece ser que tus dotes interpretativas sirvieron de algo, ya que el resultado obtenido es realmente bueno. El caballo y el entorno es precioso asi como una luz y tonos excelentes.

Well it appears that I am a late comer here! I love the story and yep I am sure that all your neighbors as well as those who run into you think you are a nut! Wish I had been a witness to this scene…..

I don’t like to shoot animals either….they do whatever they want to….when they want to….the way they want to….without a care for my wishes! I always appreciate the fine wildlife or domestic pet shots I see here on PN and have great admiration for those who do it all the time!

This is a lovely shot of old red; super sharp with beautiful light and awesome background view….are there white socks on his feet ;) I like your version, the other looks somewhat surreal. I think you are going to have fun with the new Nikon and a 50mm 1.4 prime opens a lot of doors for playing around! Take care Alf, keep shooting that D700 and sharing

Warmest regards, Pamela

Like the composition with the placement of old red and the lighthouse in frame. Use your thirds well. Wonderful mid to foreground detail and sharpness. Like how from the back of the lighthouse to the mountains are a pleasingly soft transition. Some ppl do not like the cyan tinge in the sky but it makes the background top to sea line blend nicely. Grass in the foreground is really the only thing that bothers me, pulls away from old red and the lighthouse. Maybe a adjustment with selective curves in the blue channel pulling it down a bit in the mid tones and shadows towards a yellow then add a tad bit in the red channel in the midtones. Warm it up a bit ;)

Extra credit for the calorie burn!

PAMELA

I love looking at the animal photo's too, I just didn't realise how difficult it was to get them to pose, I thought they just did it all the time like models : - )

Thank you for looking in and for your very kind and encouraging comments I'm really pleased you liked it Pamela.

I think Old Red might have one white sock, much like myself and half the male population, I wonder where all the odd socks come from, in fact where do thier partners go to, I have a theory that there is a creature that I shall name "The Sock Gremlin" who's sole purpose in life is stealing single socks and depositing them in unsuspecting males sock draws at random. I could write a whole book on this theory, but I shall desist, people are already questioning my sanity. : - )

The D700 and the 50mm prime are perfect partners, getting some great results, I've just started trying out the new Nikon 16 -35mm and so far I am really pleased with it.

Thanks Again Pamela

Warm Regards

Wow...stunning. This is how I picture Wales...west or southwest? Where was this taken...I know you live in the UK, but not in Wales so l am curious. I really love this image for several reasons: I love the sea, I love horses, I want to see the UK, and I love the way the horse is looking at you. The position of the horse and the background of the lighthouse and sea is just exquisite! Thank you so much for sharing. :)

I'm really pleased you liked it, Thank you!

The location is the West Coast of Wales. Look for the island of Anglesey, then for a place called Llandwyn Island, which is not an isalnd at all, but a peninsular that is attached to Anglesey. It really is a magical place with fantastic scenery and the history is amazing, fi you need any more help with the location, just let me know,

Thanks again Trisha

Kind Regards
